Commemorates Mark O. Hatfield for years of public service.
CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Whereas Mark O. Hatfield, a native son of Oregon, was born in
Dallas, Polk County, Oregon, on July 12, 1922; and
Whereas Mark O. Hatfield graduated from Oregon's Willamette
University in 1943 and earned his graduate degree from Stanford
University in 1948; and
Whereas Mark O. Hatfield honorably served his country as an
officer in the United States Navy and fought bravely at Iwo Jima
and Okinawa and in other theaters of World War II; and
Whereas in 1951 Mark O. Hatfield began his distinguished career
of public service by being elected to the Oregon House of
Representatives, joined the Oregon Senate in 1955, was elected
Oregon Secretary of State in 1957 and served as Oregon Governor
from 1959 to 1967; and
Whereas Mark O. Hatfield represented the people of the State of
Oregon as their United States Senator from 1967 to 1997; and
Whereas in 1953 he successfully carried the bill to ban racial
and religious discrimination in Oregon; and
Whereas in 1960 he successfully launched economic development
programs to diversify the state's economy; and
Whereas he helped to preserve Oregon's unique beauty by playing
a key role in passing wilderness protection bills, at the same
time supporting the state's natural resource industries; and
Whereas Mark O. Hatfield founded the Oregon Graduate Center,
which helped to foster the state's high-tech industry; and
Whereas over many years, United States Senator Mark O.
Hatfield delivered much-needed federal funding for Oregon
projects, such as light rail and Columbia River dams, and for
many educational institutions, particularly Oregon Health and
Science University; and
Whereas he led the Congressional effort to establish the
Columbia River National Scenic Area; and
Whereas Mark O. Hatfield has spent a lifetime working for what
he called 'the desperate human needs in our midst' by improving
health, education and social service programs; and
Whereas throughout his career of public service, Mark O.
Hatfield has consistently improved the lives of Oregonians and
earned bipartisan respect from his colleagues for his ability to
work across party lines and build coalitions that benefit Oregon;
now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
Oregon:
That we, the members of the Seventy-third Legislative Assembly,
express our gratitude to Mark O. Hatfield for his years of
service to our state, for the profound substance of his work, for
the timeless effect it will have on the State of Oregon and for
the extraordinary example he has set for all of those who
endeavor to serve their communities through public office; and be
it further
Resolved, That we declare this day as a day of honor and
tribute to Oregon's native son, Mark O. Hatfield.
